We Got the First Photos of Kate Middleton at King Charles III’s Coronation Wearing a Sparkly Headpiece

Good morning, it’s King Charles III’s coronation day and we just got our very first glimpse at photos of Kate Middleton—who showed up to this momentous royal occasion dressed like a princess. Which makes sense, since she casually is one.

Kate arrived at Charles’s coronation in Westminster Abbey wearing a formal robe and mantle, which BBC notes was “at the request of the king and queen,” which she paired with what looks to be a sparkly head piece (not a tiara) and an ivory gown by Alexander McQueen.

And speaking of her fancy head adornment, there’s been a ton of speculation about whether Kate would choose to wear a tiara, coronet, or fascinator. According to The Mirror, everyone was “rushing” to finalize details of their coronation looks just weeks before the events, and one insider said that “Senior female royals were only informed of outfits this week, prompting a rush to finalize fitting arrangements.” Meanwhile, there were reportedly “rows over tiaras,” specifically regarding whether Kate and her fellow senior royals would “wear tiaras into the church before the Queen Consort enters the Abbey.”

Looks like they landed on sparkly headpiece!

While King Charles’s coronation seems slightly less formal than past events, traditional royals wear purple velvet mantles (aka velvet capes) with ermine trim over formal dresses. At Queen Elizabeth II‘s coronation, pretty much all her ladies-in-waiting wore tiaras, not to mention evening gowns complete with elbow-length gloves.

Truly a lot for a daytime event!
