Last year, Mindy wore a purple Prabal Gurung gown with a plunging neckline, thigh-high slit, and rosettes on the shoulders (ahead of the trends, it’s casual). She spoke about what the look meant to her on Instagram, saying, “I was honored to wear @prabalgurung at the Met Gala tonight in celebration of creativity and the power of fashion. ‘Who gets to be American?’ was a question posed by @prabalgurung’s 2020 collection. It’s something I’m fascinated with, so seeing the exhibit (featuring installations by @janicza, @autumndewilde @tomford and others) was such a treat. My younger self could never imagine I would have access to such rarified and amazing places. Grateful to @vogue and to my team.”
Mindy opened up about her very first time at the Met Gala back during a conversation with Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, saying, “I did feel like fraudulent the first year I went. You don’t know the secret things you’re supposed to do, when I went I was staying downtown with a friend. I didn’t know you were supposed to stay uptown near the Met. You’re supposed to get in a standing van so your dress didn’t wrinkle. I was just in a cab, in my dress, sitting in the backseat of a car, you know, driving for 45 minutes. I didn’t realize until I got there, ‘Oh, this isn’t how Cate Blanchett and Rihanna are coming to the Met.’”
