Halle Bailey is many things: a cat mom, Beyoncé’s protégé, one-half of the iconic duo Chloe x Halle, and most recently, the first-ever Black Ariel in the history-making remake of The Little Mermaid. But she’s also a young woman of color who—just by loving herself and being unapologetically Black—gets under the skin of internet haters and trolls. The knowledge that she has made both a literal and figurative splash, reaching millions of young Black girls who can now see themselves on-screen in an iconic Disney movie, means the vitriol is a tiny bit more bearable.
See, Halle believes in, as she puts it, “making beautiful noise,” or using her voice and her power to champion young Black and brown girls across the world. Which is why she decided to partner with Gucci CHIME, a global campaign dedicated to advancing gender equality that was co-founded ten years ago with Beyoncé and Salma Hayek.
“A world that’s gender equal to me is us not even having to say it’s equal,” says Halle in the video above. “For us Black and brown women to just be able to be anything that they want to be. We can make beautiful noise by doing the things we love, lifting each other, and making a better world for each other.”
Starting June 1, Gucci CHIME will release a 35-part video series featuring Halle, Julia Roberts, Idris Elba, Serena Williams and more big-deal names, as they speak about what gender equality means to them in an effort to renew global support for the issue.
