Everything We Know About ‘The Witcher’ Season 4’s Big Cast Change (and Everything Else)

Fantasy girlies, I have good news and bad news. It seems that Netflix is committed to making more of The Witcher, but the series will never be the same. As we know, The Witcher season 3, volume 2 just arrived on Netflix. But now what? And now… who? Here’s what we know about The Witcher season 4 and the passing of the blonde wig.

Is The Witcher returning for season 4?

Theoretically, yes, and with a twist. Netflix announced in October 2022 that Liam Hemsworth will be taking over the role of Geralt in The Witcher season 4. (So we know the streamer is committed to a fourth season.) Netflix did that instead of just announcing that the show was renewed, which is unconventional to say the least.

As of the season 3, volume 2 premiere, the cast was still talking about Liam’s pending arrival. “I’m not worried. He’s going to be brilliant,” Anya Chalotra told Digital Spy. “I really think so. I mean, we’ve spent five years going on this journey together, and I’m so excited for Henry. At some point, that had to come to an end, his portrayal of Geralt, and that’s been incredible. We’ve had such a wonderful time with him. But also bringing in new people to this journey we’re on is so exciting at this stage.”

Who will be in The Witcher season 4?

Well, not Henry Cavill. Liam is playing Henry’s part now. But I presume that, without spoiling anything from The Witcher season 3, other series regulars like Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan will return as Yennifer and Ciri. It feels likely that other cast members like Mecia Simson, who plays Francesca, and Bart Edwards, who plays Emhyr, will return as well. Will Joey Batey’s Jaskier sing for a new Geralt? We’ll see! (Probably, right?) One great thing about The Witcher is how the cast keeps expanding to add new characters. So I can’t wait to see who joins Liam in the new class for the new season.

What will The Witcher season 4 be about?

There are a lot of books in The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski, and the first three seasons of the show have barely touched on the events of the first three books. (To be fair, season 1 was largely adapted from prequels.) So there’s no need to worry about the material, or how the writers are going to get themselves out of any cliffhangers at the end of season 3. It’s more or less already been written!

When will The Witcher season 4 premiere on Netflix?

It’s going to be quite some time. Shows like The Witcher that have a lot of special effects take months (sometimes years) to make in normal conditions. There were two years between season 1 and season 2, and another two years between season 2 and season 3. Speedy production on The Witcher has already been hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic. And conditions have gotten even less normal. As of July 2023, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are on strike until producers and streaming networks like Netflix meet the demands of the folks who make shows we love like The Witcher and/or come to a deal.

Now, there is a possibility the season 4 scripts were completed *before* the WGA strike, given the renewal timing. There’s also a possibility Netflix could film some scenes of The Witcher season 4 if the actors are not members of SAG-AFTRA. (Many actors in the U.K. and other parts of the world are not, because they have their own unions.) But I wouldn’t count on any of that necessarily happening. We’re in a holding pattern until the strikes end, and the safest bet is to assume that there won’t be new episodes of The Witcher for at least two years… possibly even more.
