Kim Kardashian Dropped Almost 0k on Princess Diana’s Iconic Cross Necklace

Kim Kardashian scored a maaaaajor piece of royal history. TMZ reports that Kimberly just dropped $197,453 at auction for the Attallah cross, which (for those of us not up-to-date on fancy royal jewels) is a giant amethyst and diamond cross once worn by Princess Diana.

Sooo, what do we know about this cross? According to Sotheby’s, the Attallah was one of Princess Diana’s favorite pieces, and was made in the 1920s by court jewelers Garrard. Diana wore the necklace to a charity gala in October of 1987, pairing it with a Catherine Walker dress:

However, Diana didn’t actually own the cross. It was loaned to her by Garrard, and was eventually acquired by Naim Attallah—one of the company’s chief execs who was also friends with Diana. Here’s an excerpt from the Sotheby’s catalogue describing their relationship:

“Diana’s relationship with Garrard was long-standing, having selected her infamous sapphire and diamond engagement ring from the then Royal Jeweller in 1981. Over the years, she would go on to collaborate with Garrard, borrowing her favourite amethyst and diamond cross on many more occasions, as recalled by Ramsay Attallah, whose father, Naim Attallah, CBE (1931-2021) was joint managing director and eventually group chief executive of Asprey & Garrard. It was under his patronage that Garrard saw continued growth and success, remaining crown jewellers until 2007. As good friends of the Princess, Attallah acquired the cross shortly after her death and it has remained with the family, unworn, ever since.”

As for the cross itself, it’s in the fleurée style (which means there are “flowery design details”) and features square-cut amethysts and circular cut diamonds.

TBD on when Kim Kardashian will wear this, but the Met Gala is coming up…just saying.
