Netflix’s new rom-com You People ends with a romantic kiss between Lauren London and Jonah Hill, which was…apparently CGI????? Actor Andrew Schulz revealed this fact during the Brilliant Idiots podcast (which he co-hosts with Charlamagne Tha God), saying “There’s a hilarious thing. I don’t even know if I should share this shit, but the final scene, they don’t even kiss. It’s CGI. Swear to God.”
He went on to say, “I’m there and I’m watching the wedding and I see them go in for the kiss and their faces stop, like, this far. And I’m like, ‘I wonder how they’re gonna play that in the movie. Oh, they’re probably just gonna cut right there.’ But the movie you could see their faces come close and then you could see their faces morph a little bit into a fake kiss.”
No one else from the movie appears to have commented on or explained this completely wild kiss, but the Los Angeles Times notes that You People was filmed in October and November of 2021—right amid COVID-19 surges in Los Angeles. As they put it, “CGI had been in use to show physical contact since production resumed in 2020 for things like spitting scenes, sex scenes and, yes, kissing scenes.”
So…gonna go ahead and assume that this CGI kiss was the result of on-set Covid protocols until someone comes up with a better explanation!
