One of my favorite things about protective styles? Making them look one-of-a-kind isn’t hard to do. There are plenty of hair accessories, unique braiding patterns (hi, infinity braids), and fresh new styles to feed any and all hair-individuality complexes out there. But if you’re ready and willing to switch things up just a little bit more, let us intro you to your new fave styling product: hair-color wax. It’s the perfect way to add a temporary pop of color temporarily to your style—and with proper use, it won’t cause any damage to your hair.
Braid Up stylist Claudia-Ann Arthur showed us how to use hair-color wax to its fullest potential in today’s episode. Trust me, these heart-shaped braids will convince you that wax is the move. Read along for tips on how to prep for color and maintain the glory:
1. Wash your hair. It might seem obvious, but when you’re giving hair-color wax a go, it’s important to have an extra clean slate for the wax to adhere to. Get a quick wash day in with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner for curly hair.
2. Moisturize your hair. Wax typically won’t hydrate your curls, so smooth on a leave-in conditioner or a moisturizing mousse before adding your color. It’s an essential step in the prep process. We want this look to pop, not dry out.
3. Keep a detangling tool handy. When you (or your stylist) are ready to add in the color, keep detangling your hair with a brush or comb as you’re smoothing in the product to avoid clumps.
4. Remove the wax with a clarifying shampoo. Grab a detox shampoo with ingredients like apple cider vinegar to get all of the wax out of your hair without totally stripping your hair of it’s natural oils. Then, follow it up with a deep conditioner to give your hair a little TLC.
