The Biggest Makeup Trends to Try This Spring

Edward Berthelot

The weather outside is still pretty frightful, but we’re coming in hot with some makeup looks to clear your mind of the cold. Fashion Week made its return for the spring/summer 2022 season, and with it came plenty of makeup inspiration. We’ve sorely missed the hustle and bustle of backstage, the newest innovations from our favorite designers, and most importantly, the beauty looks. For a healthy reminder, this season, designers are leaning into the joy of being outside again. From pops of color smudged across eyelids to illuminated skin and rosy cheeks, the runways are alive with makeup looks from the best brands and MUAs in the business. Ahead, the biggest spring 2022 makeup trends from the runways, plus some bonus predictions on what’s ahead, straight from the pros.

Golden Hour Glow

For Collina Strada’s garden show, makeup artist Allie Smith wanted to recreate the sun-kissed glow that only comes from being outside. Smith worked with M.A.C to illuminate the skin all over, adding pops of glitter and color to the high points of the ears and hands. “Inspired by a fun day outside in a fairy garden,” Smith says. “Humid, sunny skin and dazzling colors and textures adorning the ears and hands.”

Euphoria Eyes

There’s no question that Euphoria has made a huge mark on eye makeup. We can expect to see a lot more inspiration brought to life as the weather warms up, too. “We will be seeing plenty of trendy, fun bold eye looks inspired by the iconic show,” says makeup artist Melissa Hurkman. Specifically bold graphic liners. “We will see plenty of creative ways to play with liner, not only with shapes but with colors as well.”

Sticking with the bold eye makeup theme, Hurkman also predicts that painting each eye a different color will be a fresh way to make use of your shadow palettes. “Each eye has time to shine by using a different bold color,” she says. “I created this look using green and purple.”

Dewy Highlighter

“We are retiring the reflective shimmery highlight for a glossy, dewy, skin-like highlight this spring,” says Hurkman. “This will play into the fresh makeup looks you’ll be seeing a lot this year.” She says that adding the dewy highlight at the end of your makeup application will have people thinking you just came from a HydraFacial appointment. “Don’t worry though, if you have a lot of shimmery highlighters, try using them for eyeshadow,” Hurkman suggests.

Soft-Sculpt Brows

“There’s distance from the densely drawn-on brows that had razor-sharp lines,” says makeup artist Fiona Stiles. “Brows are gently filled in, adding fullness where needed, then brushed up for a more feral, wild feeling. I like to use the Kevyn Aucoin Brow Pen for softly sculpted brows.”

Modern Debutant

Jeremy Scott tapped NYFW beauty legend Kabuki to create M.A.C Cosmetics looks on the likes of Gigi Hadid, Precious Lee, and Irina Shayk as they modeled pastel confections on the runway. “The collection is a witty juxtaposition of very ‘ladylike’ clothes made of nursery-type elements,” Kabuki says. “I was looking to create a balance of innocence and sophistication with this makeup, a ‘debutant’ in other words.”

Jewel-Toned Eyes

To set the perfect canvas, lead makeup artist Diane Kendal prepped skin with 111Skin before using Jason Wu’s eponymous beauty brand to create bold red lips and jewel-toned eyes. “We wanted to celebrate freedom and hope by adding radiance and life into the skin with the JWB hydrating and nourishing priming oil, while using sheer coverage foundation for an effortless skin,” Kendal says. “On the eyes, we had some fun and used the new Jewel Stick on the lid with springy hues like grassy greens and jubilant pinks and purples and then topping off with the Everyday Lip Mask.”
