For years, fans of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman saga honestly didn’t think the comic book series would ever be adapted for the screen. Netflix stepped up to the ultra-ambitious task, however, and recently dropped the first season of the show, which stars Tom Sturridge as Morpheus (aka Dream) as he struggles to return to his realm of dreams and reestablish his power after being trapped away for close to a hundred years.
Since source material is a 75-volume epic, there’s certainly plenty of story left to tell if Netflix ultimately decides to renew The Sandman for future installments. Here’s everything we know so far about a potential Sandman Season 2.
Is there going to be a Sandman Season 2?
After months of waiting and even a deleted tweet with the big news, Netflix has officially confirmed that the show will be back for season 2.

“There are some astonishing stories waiting for Morpheus and the rest of them (not to mention more members of the Endless Family to meet). Nobody is going to be happier about this than the Sandman cast and crew: they are the biggest Sandman fans there are. And now it’s time to get back to work,” Neil Gaiman said in a statement. “There’s a family meal ahead, after all. And Lucifer is waiting for Morpheus to return to Hell…”
And yes, there are even plans to go beyond that if Netflix gives them the green light.
“We’ve shot footage in Season 1 that we would need if we ever get to Season 5. It’s there, and it’s stored,” series author Neil Gaiman told Bustle of future plans for the TV show. “We know how we would do the entire Sandman storyline up to and including the last one, Sandman Overture.”
Showrunner Allan Heinberg was even more optimistic about the longterm future of the series, making it clear that The Sandman could continue well past Season 5, if given the chance. “We’ve got as many [seasons] as they’ll let us have,” Heinberg told NME at the show’s London premiere. “If enough viewers show up, we can go for quite a long while. We want to do all of it, we want a spin-off miniseries. We’d love to make it for as long as they’ll have us.”
What would The Sandman Season 2 be about?
The first season of The Sandman covers the first two volumes of the comics, Preludes and Nocturnes (which includes issues #1-8) and The Doll’s House (which includes issues #9-16). This means that, if the series comes back for a second season, it would presumably start with the third volume of the comics, Dream Country (which includes issues #17-20), and would likely also cover the fourth volume, Season of Mists (issues #21-28).
While Dream Country is comprised of standalone stories (including an encounter between Dream and Shakespeare), Season of Mists is considered by many fans to be the best volume of The Sandman and its plot is set up perfectly by the end of Season 1 (when Lucifer vows to get revenge on Morpheus). Season of Mists also wraps up the story of Dream and his former lover, Nada, as well as introducing and building on a whole slew of fan favorite characters, including Endless members Destiny and Delirium and Gaiman’s take on iconic Norse gods Thor, Loki, and Odin. So, basically, there’s a lot of great stuff to expect if Netflix gives The Sandman a green light for Season 2.
When will The Sandman season 2 be released?
If Netflix renews The Sandman for a second season, we’ll likely have to wait a *while* to finally see it. Even if production on Season 2 started this fall/early winter, we’re still probably looking at a late 2023 or even 2024 release date for the second season.
