Between the new “expensive blond blond” hair trend sweeping Hollywood (à la Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hailey Bieber) and the quintessential platinum shade that comes with the cooler months, there are a ton of hair colors you can fill your fall inspiration board with. However, choosing the right one for you can often be a little overwhelming, especially when there are so many different options to choose from. If you still haven’t found the one to ask for at your next salon appointment, and you’re looking for something low maintenance, we’d suggest considering the mushroom blond hair color.

The look, which was recently seen on Jordyn Woods, is a cool-toned hue that is going to be taking over our social media feeds and our lives this season.

Ahead, experts break down everything to know about the popular shade, like what it is, who it looks best on, and how you can maintain it at home. Keep scrolling to learn everything there is to know about the mushroom-blond hair color trend.

What Is Mushroom Blond Hair Color?

Mushroom-blond hair is exactly what it sounds like: a version of blond that hairstylists at NYC-based Butterfly Studio Salon describe as being closer to “beige” or “nude.” The color is a tiny bit reminiscent of a mushroom, which is where it gets its name. Tamara Defelice tells POPSUGAR that the look is perfect for those who are “super brassy from going the lightest shades of blond in the summer, because it preserves hair’s health all during cooler seasons.” Essentially, it’s a combination of highlights and lowlights that are weaved through a cool-toned blond base.

What sets mushroom blond apart from similar hair colors are its key features: the dark, cool brown hue that comes from the root and the lighter pieces that frame the face. “Don’t be scared to keep or create icier blonde pieces around the face frame,” Defelice says.

The hair color looks great on most hairstyles, whether it’s a bob haircut or long cascading waves because it can be completely customized. Plus, it’s perfect for anyone who wants a low-maintenance look, since you only need to head into the salon for touch-ups every four to six months or so.

How to Maintain Mushroom Blond Hair at Home

Defelice suggests keeping the look toned with a color-depositing hair product like the Kerastase Bain Ultra-Violet Purple Shampoo ($40).

Also, if you use hot tools, it’s important to use a heat protectant prior to styling your hair. Our current favorite is the Moroccan Oil Perfect Defense Heat Protectant ($30). It’s also important to use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner, like the Bondi Boost HG Shampoo & Conditioner Duo for Thinning Hair ($50), which will help maintain the longevity of your color.
