Michael Kors’s love affair with New York began, as most sartorial stories do, at Bergdorf Goodman. The fashion school dropout famously took a job designing window displays for a now-defunct boutique called Lothar’s across the street from the luxury department store, then-fashion director Dawn Mello saw his work through the glass, and the rest was history. So for his latest collection, the designer paid homage to the city that never sleeps in the flashiest way possible. Via Instagram, his team teased FW22 with a series of clips titled “A Night on the Town”: something sparkly in a garment bag, taxi cabs zipping down the avenues, scenic shots of the Empire State Building, The Carlyle, and The Top of the Standard, and a raucous concert at House of Yes.
The runway show, held at Terminal 5 in Midtown Manhattan—the venue’s first-ever fashion presentation—was attended by OG Kors fans (Brooke Shields and Blake Lively) and newcomers (Addison Rae and Ariana DeBose) alike, even NYC Mayor Eric Adams, and featured a musical performance by Miguel. Clad in a long black leather jacket and matching pants, the singer alternated between his own songs and Prince covers.
As for the clothes, camel tones gave way to faux croc jackets, glamorous trench coats, and oversized suiting. There were pops of red and fuchsia, bodycon catsuits, hoods, and sequin embellishments. The accessories, undoubtedly Kors’s forte, were something to talk about: fuzzy, Lenny Kravitz-esque scarves, XL satchels in an array of textures, and wide belts. Fittingly, a cast of mostly New York-based models walked the runway, including Bella and Gigi Hadid, Irina Shayk, Paloma Elsesser, and Emily Ratajkowski, in looks made for stepping out.
“For this show, I wanted to bring the excitement and energy of a night on the town to life—because I think right now, no matter where you are, we’re all craving that,” Kors wrote in the collection notes. “And the clothes are really everything you need for stepping up, stepping out and making an entrance.”
Like last season’s show at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, Gigi closed (sans Kendall Jenner) in a stunning black sequin one-shoulder dress with a torso-revealing cutout and thigh-high leg slit. The backlighting of the stage and runway was reminiscent of city lights, harking back to a pre-pandemic NYC. As “Raspberry Beret” blared through the speakers and Kors gave his final bow, we couldn’t help but think that the end’s not near, it might (finally) be here.
