But there’s a solution to reviving them. “You’re most likely to encounter this issue with leather boots, or something without a large rubber upper,” Sherman explains. “We recommend first treating leather boots with a weatherizing agent to reduce the impacts of water prior to wearing, and then carefully using a washcloth as needed to remove any salt buildup you notice.”

Cleaning your snow boots depends on the type of boot (and material), with these tips from Sherman…

  • Check the manufacturers’ recommendations for how to best care for your snow boots.
  • Sometimes, you’ll have the option to remove insoles and laces and clean them separately.
  • It is also recommended to give your boots a break here and there if they are made from cloth-like or leather material.

Here are Lin’s top techniques for cleaning snow boots:

  • Using a moist, clean cloth, first wipe boots down (or, you can spray them down with a boot cleaner after wearing). Then, dry your boots in a warm, dry space: “A dedicated boot dryer can help to expedite the drying process, which is especially helpful when wearing snow boots for days on end,” Lin explains.

Any tips for breaking in snow boots?

Plan ahead if you need to break in your snow boots before your next adventure because comfort = key!

“It can help to wear them around inside of your home for a couple of hours each day before commissioning them for outdoor use,” Lin advises. Also, try to do all the things in ’em, like drive with them and wear them while running errands, prior to trekking through inches (or feet) of snowfall. “Leather boots, in particular, can take some time to become comfortable and there’s nothing worse than blisters on your heel while out on the trail,” Sherman says.
