Amanda Bynes has taken the first steps to end her conservatorship.
The All That and Easy A actor filed documents Wednesday asking the court to terminate the court-ordered conservatorship of her person and estate, which has lasted over nine years, per Page Six. The Nickelodeon alum and prolific child actress was placed under the legal arrangement in 2013, giving her mother, Lynn Bynes, legal control of her personal and medical affairs.
The Hairspray actor’s lawyer, David A. Esquibias, told People, “Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary.”
In August 2013, the former child star was placed under a 5150 psychiatric hold after reportedly starting a fire in someone’s driveway in Thousand Oaks, California, at which point a judge put her under a temporary conservatorship that has been extended multiple times over the years. Bynes regained control of her financial affairs in 2017, but her mother remains in charge of all personal and health care decisions.

The Amanda Show star’s petition comes after Britney Spears’ fight to end her own 13-year-long conservatorship, which was terminated by a California judge last November. The two women have similar cases, as young stars who were publicly scrutinized during the paparazzi frenzy of the late ’00s. They were also both placed under the legal arrangements after involuntary 5150 holds prompted by erratic behavior.
In recent years, the She’s the Man actor has shared more about her life publicly. In a 2018 Paper cover interview, the star discussed her academic career at the Fashion Institute of Merchandising in LA, where she graduated with her associate’s degree in 2019. She also revealed that she hoped to design her own fashion line and get back to acting.
A hearing on Bynes’ conservatorship case is scheduled for March 22.
