E.R. in her first major acting role as aspiring singer Squeak, news of Taraji P. Henson’s casting as the role of Shug Avery and Corey Hawkins portraying Harpo followed. Finally, in an “ABC News” special on Feb. 3, Oprah Winfrey unveiled the official lineup of lead actors in the adaptation, revealing Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Fantasia Taylor, and Colman Domingo were joining the cast.

Slated to direct is “Black Is King” co-director Blitz Bazawule, while Winfrey — whose portrayal of Sofia in the Spielberg adaptation earned her an Oscar nomination — has signed on as a producer.
