The long-awaited adaptation of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is finally hitting the big screen and trust us, it was completely worth the wait. Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s coming-of-age love story has long been a fan favorite and now, 10 years later, fans will get to see it in a brand new way. But while there’s still a few more days until it officially comes out, you don’t have to wait too long to get a peek.
In an exclusive clip for Cosmopolitan—which you can check out above—Aristotle joins Dante’s family for the first time on their big camping trip and it’s clear to everyone that they have definitely gotten closer over the last few months. But the real moment comes when Dante calls Aristotle over to see the stars and then comes one of the most iconic quotes from the book.
“This clip and the entire story is about giving ourselves permission to stop—wonder and question what’s possible. In Ari’s case that invitation comes from Dante who adamantly lives with this pursuit, which is clearly nurtured by his parents,” director Aitch Alberto told Cosmopolitan. “It’s not coincidence that their names are Aristotle and Dante, they are tiny philosophers questioning the world around them and their place in it but as we see in the film if we don’t live in the present we miss the love that’s right in front of us—now. “
The movie stars Max Pelayo as Aristotle Mendoza and Reese Gonzales as Dante Quintana. Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria, Verónica Falcón, Isabella Gomez, Luna Blaise, Kevin Alejandro, and Marlene Forte round out the cast.
The film centers on the friendship between two teenage Mexican-American loners in 1987 El Paso who explore a new, unusual friendship and the difficult road to self-discovery.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe will be released in theaters on September 8, 2023.
