I’ve had issues with my scalp for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, instead of using the ever-popular Herbal Essences that all my friends had, my parents used to buy me Head & Shoulders, and I’d use it religiously in order to find some relief from the constant itchiness and flakiness that I always seemed to experience. While my brand of choice has changed since then, I do frequently use products that are geared toward a healthy scalp because, even after all these years, I still need a little extra help.

I’ve tried scrubs, I’ve tested oils, and I’ve even taken advantage of professional treatments, but there’s nothing I love more than an at-home product that can be used easily and effectively. I’m a big fan of Briogeo’s hair-care brand, and when I learned it was coming out with a new product in its Scalp Revival line, I immediately wanted to test it out. I’ve been using the Briogeo Charcoal + Tea Tree Buildup Detox Spray ($26) for a few weeks now, and it’s drastically changed the health of my scalp.

Keep scrolling to read my full review of the product and learn about how it worked for me and my dry, flaky scalp.

About the Briogeo Buildup Detox Spray

  • The spray is an exfoliating prewash treatment meant to be used before shampoo and conditioner.
  • It is a chemical exfoliant formulated with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) to eliminate buildup on the scalp.
  • It’s also made with tea tree oil to soothe itchiness as well as hyaluronic acid to moisturize.
  • It’s formulated for all hair types and textures, but it’s best for for those who experience flakes or dryness.
  • The product is vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free.

What I Like About the Briogeo Buildup Detox Spray

I’ve previously tried using scalp scrubs, but I often found that the physical exfoliation was too harsh on my head and left my skin irritated and flaky. This product utilizes chemical exfoliants, so it isn’t chunky and doesn’t bother my scalp. It’s gentle but still gives me that squeaky-clean feeling whenever I use it, and because it has a light minty scent, my head also feels cool and refreshed.

My hair feels less weighed down at the roots, which ends up giving me more volume during styling. Plus, I like that I can apply it prior to getting in the shower because I’m able to let it sit while I do other things — and I love a product that allows me to multitask.

How to Use the Briogeo Buildup Detox Spray

This product is meant to be used prior to shampooing, so the brand recommends parting your hair while it’s still dry and then spraying it directly onto your scalp. From there, they recommend massaging everything in and leaving it on for up to 15 minutes before following it up with your regular shampoo and conditioner.

I use this spray as instructed, but I like to part my hair into multiple sections in order to make sure I’m covering my entire head. I found that the spray nozzle can be a bit difficult to use at times, so occasionally I spray the liquid into my hand and then rub it into my scalp.

I typically see the most buildup in the center of my scalp where I part my hair and the middle back area of my head where sweat tends to collect when I’ve been working out, so I take extra time massaging into those areas.

The brand doesn’t note how often you should use it on the label, but I use it once a week, follow up with shampoo and conditioner, and then finish everything off with the Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Cooling Hydration Mask ($34) because I find that it soothes my scalp after exfoliating. Also, I typically double-cleanse my hair with shampoo whenever I wash it, but if I’m using this spray, I only wash once.

What to Consider Before Trying the Briogeo Buildup Detox Spray

As I previously mentioned, the only complaint I have about this product is that the spray nozzle can be a little tricky to use. Sometimes I find that the liquid runs down my face or into my eyes when I mist it onto my head, so in order to work around that, I sometimes spray it directly into my hand and then apply it to my scalp from there.
