One Beauty Editor’s Honest Thoughts on the Viral TheraFace PRO Device

If there’s a new skincare tool or device on the market, you better believe I’m going to test it out. My latest obsession? The TheraFace PRO. It’s similar to the TheraGun that you would use on your body muscles after a grueling workout, but this special face version is meant to reduce tension and massage the muscles around your eyes, on your forehead and cheeks, and along your jawline.

I tend to clench my jaw and furrow my brow, so the main reason I wanted to try the TheraFace Pro was for its massaging benefits, but it turns out it has a lot more to offer—including LED light therapy, a cleansing brush, and microcurrent attachments too. Read on for my honest review of the TheraFace PRO and its many different features, along with the pros and cons of using a TheraFace PRO in your skincare routine.

What is the TheraFace PRO?

The TheraFace PRO is a facial massage tool that has three different speed settings with three easy-to-swap-out massage (or “percussive”) attachments. If you’re treating something like TMJ or are experiencing tenderness in an area from clenching or grinding your teeth, you can customize your massage experience to best suit your needs.

The device does way more than just massage your face though. There are additional attachment heads, like one with LED light rings for smoothing wrinkles and getting rid of acne, a cleansing ring (self-explanatory), and a microcurrent attachment for lifting and toning your skin. There are also additional temperature-focused attachments that you can purchase as an add-on for hot and cold therapies.

Does TheraFace PRO help with wrinkles?

Yes, the TheraFace PRO can help with wrinkles in several different ways. If you’re constantly carrying tension and stressing out your muscles from clenching or making certain expressions, you’re encouraging wrinkles to set in and take up a permanent spot on your face. By massaging those muscles and forcing your face to relax, you’re helping to mitigate the long-lasting effects that repetitive expressions can have.

Additionally, the microcurrent ring attachment can help with firming and tightening to smooth forehead lines and face wrinkles. Similar to a NuFace and other popular microcurrent devices, there’s a head that uses an electric current to engage the muscles and essentially work them out for a more toned effect. Lastly, there’s an LED ring that emits red and infrared lights that target wrinkles by stimulating collagen production to plump and smooth the skin.

What are the benefits of the TheraFace PRO microcurrent attachments?

The microcurrent attachment turns your TheraFace PRO into a lifting and toning wand. Estheticians will use these types of devices–albeit more powerful version–in facials to give clients a more sculpted appearance. At home versions work similarly and use a gentle electric current that interacts with the electrical currents in the body to stimulate muscles for a temporary lifting effect. Sometimes you may feel a little twitch, which signals that the muscles are in fact engaged and the device is working.

What are the benefits of the TheraFace PRO LED attachments?

If you use the LED light ring, you can choose red or red and infrared light (it looks kinda purplish) to improve skin tone and texture or blue light to kill acne-causing bacteria and treat breakouts. The lights can actually be used in tandem with a percussive attachment, so you get a multifaceted treatment that massages and uses light therapy to treat your skin simultaneously. The only one they advise against using with the percussive attachment is the blue light so that you don’t spread bacteria.

Can you use the TheraFace Pro every day?

Yes, you can use the TheraFace PRO every day, and because of its many attachments, you may choose to do the same treatment or a different one each day depending on your skin’s needs. Of course, if you commit to using microcurrent every day, you’ll likely see the best lifting results or if you have acne and add the blue light therapy to your routine, you should notice that your skin starts to clear with continued use.

My review of the TheraFace PRO:

My initial thoughts:

My first impression after taking my TheraFace Pro out of the box was that it’s relatively lightweight and has an ergonomic feel to it. One of the most impressive parts is the way that the attachment heads click on and off—the magnet is seriously impressive. Some facial tools can feel cheap or like the head is not secure after you’ve taken it off and put it back on a million times, but these ones snap right in place and if you didn’t know any better, they’d appear to be part of the device’s permanent structure.

At first, I didn’t know if my device was charged because it wasn’t turning o— or so I thought. I hadn’t read the instructions and was trying to press the middle of the three buttons on the handle, but the power button is the one on the bottom, followed by the middle which controls the LED light and then the top button is for changing the percussive speeds.

In terms of the first time I used it, TBH, I was a little bit scared. Mostly because I’ve used a TheraGun before and they can be pretty intense. But out of all of the skin tools I’ve tried, I can confidently say I’ve never used one that massaged my face like the TheraFace Pro. Sure I’ve used Gua Sha tools and all sorts of facial rollers and jade rollers, but the percussive element of TheraFace Pro was a completely different feeling. I worked up to the level three speed massage and it didn’t hurt at all. In fact, it felt really good, especially along my jaw, which gets the brunt of my tension clenching. I honestly zoned out and was just gliding it along my face as it did its thing until I heard three beeps to signal the max massage time has been reached. The device comes with a user manual to show you exactly how to use it and there are helpful videos on therabody.com, which I utilized as well.

How I tested it:

I started out by using the different massaging heads because it felt most true to the TheraGun brand before making my way into the other attachments. The first time I used it was in the morning to see if it would have any effect on my puffy, tired face and then I started using it in the evenings as part of my wind-down routine, which I began to look forward to each night.

In the mornings I like to start my day with a good sweat sesh to wake myself up. Mostly, I feel like getting my circulation going takes care of the puffiness that I woke up with, but after using the TheraFace I think I may be able to sleep in a bit because it had my face looking snatched.

My favorite of the three percussive heads is the flat one because it felt the most natural and like it covered the most space as it massaged. The pointed head felt a little awkward and the bumpy one felt like it got a little deeper with an almost scraping sensation similar to gua sha.

I’ve had my fair share of two-a-days with the TheraFace, but for the sake of time, I like to designate it to use in either the morning or at night. When it’s part of my before-bed routine, I incorporate the LED head, especially the blue light mode in order to kill any acne-causing bacteria that may be hanging on from the day (even after cleansing). It makes me feel like I’m really squeaky clean before I get into bed so I can rest easy.

I also have the extra warming and cooling attachments, which up the ante on my wake-up and wind-down routines. The cold is like a jolt of energy in the morning while the warm gets me ready to drift off to dreamland.

My honest thoughts:

I’ve enjoyed using it and feel like I can really tell by looking at my face when I have or haven’t TheraFace-d for the day. Considering it is a facial device, I’m happy with how it made me look, but more than that, the massage element of it is a game changer and it wasn’t something I ever thought I wanted or needed before this. I enjoy having all the different attachment heads for one device because it feels more useful, economical, and space-saving rather than having an LED gadget, a cleansing brush, a separate microcurrent device, etc.

Bonus: I wasn’t using a cleansing brush, but now that I have this one, I’m going to start. The silicone bristles feel much more sanitary than brush bristles and I feel like I’m getting a deeper clean this way, plus it’s massaging my face while I cleanse so I get a 2-in-1 benefit.

Is the TheraFace PRO worth it?

At $399, there’s no denying that the TheraFace PRO is pricey, but if you’re someone who’s serious about self-care and taking care of your skin, I think it’s a great investment. If you’re already using several different facial tools or you’re the type that would use them if you had them, then I think the TheraFace is a great way to get the benefits from a bunch of different gadgets in one. There’s also a package that’s $299, which comes with the LED attachment along with the three percussive heads, just without the microcurrent and cleansing attachments.

Another reason I think that the TheraFace PRO is worth it is if you grind your teeth or clench your jaw and are seeking some relief in that area. I didn’t realize how beneficial this tool would be for the way my muscles feel in addition to how my skin and face look.
