When Rachel Zegler revealed in an Instagram comment on Sunday night that she was not invited to the 2022 Oscars—despite the fact that West Side Story has been nominated for multiple awards and she’s *literally* the film’s star—fans collectively and understandably lost it.
Since the backlash though, the Academy has (finally!) extended Rachel her rightful invite and she will now be a presenter at the ceremony, reported The Hollywood Reporter. Rachel is filming Disney’s live-action Snow White in London at the moment, but they are trying to rearrange filming to accommodate her attendance to the Oscars.
ICYMI, here’s what originally went down: In response to a fan who commented, “Can’t wait to see what you’ll be wearing on Oscar night,” Rachel responded directly to the user, writing, “I’m not invited, so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.”
She added, “Idk y’all i have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening :’) i will root for west side story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago. I hope some last minute miracle occurs and i can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, i guess. thanks for all the shock and outrage — i’m disappointed, too. but that’s okay. so proud of our movie. ❤️”

Obviously, this was shockingly unfair and makes literally no sense whatsoever, and Twitter was up in arms—prompting Rachel to respond with, “My goodness, folks!! appreciate all the support, i really really do. we live in such unprecedented times, and a lot of work behind the scenes goes into making movie magic happen. that goes for film productions (like the one I am so lucky to be currently shooting in london)…and awards shows alike. let’s all just respect the process and i’ll get off my phone x R.”

Since Rachel isn’t nominated in a solo category this year, the Academy didn’t have to invite her. But! They do give a certain amount of tickets to studios to disperse, explained THR, so at the verrrry least Disney could have offered one to her considering she’s the star of one of its movie. Alas, Disney also wasn’t *obligated* to extend an invite. Now as a presenter though, Rachel gets two tickets, so it all thankfully worked out.
The Academy nor Disney never responded to Rachel’s post, nor did they offer an explanation as to why an actor in a nominated movie wasn’t invited to the show. But we’re glad to see she’s finally going to be at the show, where she rightfully belongs!
