Take a Look at the Biggest Fall Clothing Trends of 2023

Last February, when I first laid eyes on the clothing from the fall/winter 2023 shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, I wanted to add them all to cart immediately—but alas, that’s pretty much impossible. After each look hits the runway, corporate buyers have to select which items they want to purchase from the designer, then they need to produce the collections at scale, and all of that supply-chain madness takes time. Good news though: The time is now. As in, these trending clothes are finally available to shop!

The reason this season’s biggest ready-to-wear styles have me absolutely drooling? They’re just so damn fun! From sporty motocross details (as seen on the Diesel and Marine Serre runways) to relaxed suiting (shown throughout Valentino’s collection), the vibe is all about escapism. And exaggeration. Think: larger-than-life puffers (thanks, Rick Owen and Dion Lee) and surreal silhouettes (h/t Loewe). Lucky for you, all of these OTT fashion trends are still highly wearable—that is, as long as you’re committed to having a good time in ’em. Keep scrolling to see and shop (!!) exactly what I’m talking about.

BTW, if you’d like to fully go down the rabbit hole, head over here for Cosmos comprehensive fall 2023 trend report, and take a whirl through the bag trends, shoe trends, and jewelry trends while you’re at it. We’ve got a lot of shopping to do.

Laced-Up Looks

This trend has me tied up in the best way possible. Basically, it’s little corset moments seen across tops, dresses, skirts, and pants…but without the squishing-your-organs, Victorian-era-BS part. Come to think of it, these laces might actually help you breathe easier, considering they’re essentially peekaboo cutouts that give you a chance to let loose and show a little (or a lot) more skin.

XXL Puffers

Let’s discuss outerwear for a minute, because obviously when the temps (finally) start to drop later this fall, we’ll need to bundle. And bundle you will with this the-bigger-the-better jacket trend. We’re talking oversized, double-stuffed styles, with unapologetic head-turning patterns and colors to boot.

Laid-Back Suiting

Time to get suited and booted, ppl! But, like, in a low-key way. No, really, designers are cordially inviting you to incorporate structural suit details into your everyday. That means combining a black-tie tuxedo top with cutoff jorts or slipping into a strapless vest and wide-leg pants. It brings a whole new meaning to business casual, no?

Saturday Morning Cartoons

Cheeky little satirical moments! Bulbous details! Zany shapes! Fashion designers are out here making this fall the season to show off your sense of humor and even channel your inner kid just a bit. You’ll notice that lots of these pieces would look right at home on the set of The Jetsons (hi, hoop dress), but they’ve been rendered for our 3D lives. Will these styles get you noticed on the street? Oh yeah, bb.

Motocross Energy

When I say “motocross,” you must understand that I’m taking a few liberties and grouping any kind of sporty vehicle racing in here. It’s all about patchwork leathers, flag-inspired checkered patterns, and more vibes borrowed from cars, motorcycles, and workers in the pit. Can you tell I know very little about these sports? I’m sorry, but at least I have a sartorial appreciation for them now! And you should too. Vroom, vroom.
