If I were to rank the most important bantu knot moments history, it’d likely go: 1.) Jada Pinkett Smith’s iconic Matrix hair, 2) Rihanna‘s seemingly permanent IG profile picture, and 3) today’s Bantu highlight reel on The Braid Up.
That’s right, I’m out here doing the work, and by that, I mean searching through all of the countless gorgeous styles featured in Braid Up videos of days past, all to handpick the absolute best bantu knots that have ever graced our beloved studio. With that, feast your eyes on the top three winners, all of which not only understood the assignment, but turned in some extra credit work as well. They might just inspire you to give this look a go in the near future. And when that time comes? The tips below will come in clutch for making your bantu knots pop.
1. Prep your hair. Your natural hair should be fresh and prepped to hold up these gorgeous, defined knots. So, wash out any leftover buildup with a clarifying shampoo, then follow it up with a deep conditioner to moisturize your hair.
2. Dress up your knots. In today’s roundup, you’ll peep that a couple of these styles call for added accessories, so stock up! We’re talkin’ beads, rings, cuffs—all of ’em.
3. Maintain your hair while you sleep. Keeping that silk bonnet on at night will help keep your knots flyaway-free. You can also sleep on a silk pillowcase for extra measure will keep your bed decor and this protective style looking cute too.
4. Moisturize your scalp. Never neglect your scalp, even when you’ve got knots in. Some faves for added moisture as of late? Jojoba oil to moisturize, castor oil to keep the water in, and a dash of peppermint oil to help you relax.
