Figure skating at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing continued on Feb. 5 with the team event, and Team USA slipped from first-place position into second after rough skates from Karen Chen and Vincent Zhou. Both skaters made errors in their short program and free skate, respectively, but career-best routines from Nathan Chen, ice dancers Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, and pairs skaters Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier mean that Team USA is still in podium position heading into the last day of the competition.
In the figure-skating team event, teams are divided by country and awarded points based on how each skater finishes in their discipline: 10 for a first-place finish, nine for second place, and so on. The US is currently in second place with 42 points; the Russian Olympic Committee is in first with 45 points, and Japan is in third with 39. There’s still plenty of skating left to go, though, with pairs, ice dance, and the women’s free skate coming up tomorrow. No matter how it all turns out, the first two days of figure skating has already given us some stunning performances to enjoy from Team USA. Catch up with all the team-event programs from Nathan Chen, Hubbell and Donohue, Knierim and Frazier, Karen Chen, and Zhou.
