Why Miley Cyrus “Didn’t Make a Dime” From Her Entire ‘Bangerz’ Tour

Miley Cyrus keeps sharing snippets of her past eras thanks to her “Used to Be Young” TikTok series, from iconic paparazzi photos with Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato to her “grueling” work schedule at 12 years old. In the latest installment of the series, Miley reflected on her record-breaking Bangerz album cycle, where she reinvented her musical persona with tracks like “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball.”

When it came time to tour for the record, though, Miley revealed she paid for everything to put on the exact show she wanted, and she “didn’t make a dime” from any of the shows.

“The Bangerz Tour was an investment in myself,” Miley said in the clip. “A lot of these ideas were so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces. And so I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue.”

Because of the high-camp nature of the show, the 30-year-old “Flowers” hitmaker had to sacrifice her earnings to put on the performance she felt her fans deserved.

“I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent,” she explained before breaking down why she went to great lengths without turning much of a profit. “I said, ‘There’s no one I would rather invest in than myself.’ So I paid for it all, to make it exactly what I thought I and the fans deserved.”

In case you couldn’t make it to a Bangerz show—which is the last time Miley toured, BTW—she closed it off with a Truman Show reference. She detailed the moment her creative director at the time, Diane Martel, asked her how she wanted to end her set.

“She goes, ‘How would you want to end this concert? The show is so big, how do you end it?'” Miley said. “And I wanted to end it in a Truman Show reference, so I flew out on a giant hot dog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign the way that Jim Carrey does because I felt like The Truman Show was really a reflection of my life.”
