It’s her turn now! Melissa is on the stage and ready to have her Sally Bowles moment in the spotlight in the next episode of Schmicago Schmigadoon!.
Cosmopolitan has an exclusive clip from episode 5 of Schmigadoon!’s second season (which you can check out above) that features Cecily Strong’s character, Melissa, taking center stage at the club…by herself?! That’s right—the woman who used to be considered the worst dancer who ever auditioned to perform there is performing a big solo, and all eyes are definitely on her.
The show’s second season changed things up for the cast as they pay homage to ’60s and ’70s musicals like Chicago, Pippin, and even Hair. And you don’t have to be a big musical theater nerd to know that this is a homage to the iconic “Maybe This Time” number from Cabaret.
Not only is her husband, Josh (played by Keegan Michael-Key), there to give her some encouragement, but Kratt (Hadestown’s Patrick Page) and Sergeant Rivera (Jane the Virgin’s Jaime Camil) are sitting right in the center and it’s very clear that they have some other plans. Especially because Kratt seems to be eyeing her as his new wife and is hoping to take her all for himself, no matter the cost.
And there’s a lot more going on in Schmicago: Not only do Josh and Melissa still have to find a happy end, but now there’s also Dooley (Alan Cumming) and Miss Codwell’s (Kristin Chenoweth) new Sweeny Todd–like plan that involves orphans and pies. With their big return home on the line, will they manage to make it out and find their happy ending?
