Prince Harry’s Current Title Situation Is Even More Confusing Than King Charles’ Inexplicable Hatred of Pens

At first glance, Prince Harry’s title is simple. Like…it’s literally just Prince Harry. But since Harry stepped away from official royal duties and became pretty much completely estranged from his family (awk times), his title has undergone some switch-ups. And if you find yourself lost/confused/wondering why you even care about this (but, hey, you’re here anyway): It’s actually pretty simple. By which we mean kinda complicated, so buckle up.

To get right to the point, Harry’s full title is currently….Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. He is also Earl of Dumbarton and Baron of Kilkeel, but these are lesser titles. The more complicated, less to-the-point version? Ahem:

Prince Harry Is No Longer His Royal Highness (aka HRH)

While Prince Harry is still a prince, he no longer gets referred to with the honorific “His Royal Highness.” In other words, Harry lost HRH status, something Buckingham Palace made abundantly clear in a statement back in January 2020, when they said, “The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles, as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.”

That said, the royals only *just* updated their own website to remove the HRH in front of Prince Harry’s name—a move that came directly after The Express wrote an article headlined, “Harry name blunder just one of many humiliating mistakes on official Royal Family website.”

But He’s Still the Duke of Sussex…for Now

Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have—thus far—retained the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles the Queen gave them when they got married. But there’s honestly been a lot of speculation (and conflicting reports) that they could lose them as a result of Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare.

Here’s a brief timeline of all this title-centric back-and-forth:

January 2020: The Evening Standard reported the Queen herself had considered stripping Meghan and Harry of their titles and was contemplating making Harry use his lesser title, the Earl of Dumbarton. But obviously, she decided against this!

October 2022: Royal expert Katie Nicholl told GB News (via The Express) that “there might be a question mark over the future of Harry and Meghan’s titles potentially if they are seen to be deliberately tarnishing the reputation of the monarchy.”

January 2023: Amid Spare dropping (not to mention the Sussexes’ Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan), a royal source told Us Weekly, “There’s a very real decision to be made, of course, with respect to whether or not the Sussexes get to keep their titles. The way to strike back would be to approve a measure whereby Harry and Meghan are stripped of their titles, and that’s a very real possibility—certainly if the toxicity doesn’t eventually subside.”

April 2023: Author Robert Jobson wrote in his book Our King: Charles III that “The idea of stripping Harry of his Duke of Sussex title has been discussed at the highest level. The King is said not to be in favor, but other senior royals are less indulgent. Ultimately, despite Charles’s enduring love for his son, he will come under increasing pressure if Harry continues to attack the monarchy. At that point, the King would have two options: put up with the spreading stain on his reign, or take action to limit its scope. In short, Harry and Meghan could yet find themselves demoted to Mr. and Mrs. Mountbatten-Windsor of Montecito, California.”

August 2023: Jobson updated The Express on where things stand, saying, “I was at Royal Ascot the other day and I met a source, who is quite close to the Royal Family. I said, ‘Well, what about all this stuff about stripping titles? If you’re going to have a President Meghan, then surely, they’re not going to want to have their royal titles and they will be kicked out of the line succession?’ I asked. And he absolutely categorically said that’s just not going to happen.”

Prince Harry Does NOT Want to Give Up His Title

He was confronted point blank about it by Anderson Cooper during their 60 Minutes interview. In short, Anderson asked, “Why not renounce your titles as duke and duchess?” and Prince Harry shot back, “And what difference would that make?”

That’s pretty much everything we know about Harry’s title in 2023, but we’ll update this article should anything change (looking at you, King Charles).
