Jennifer Hudson Serenades Her Son, David, on His 14th Birthday: “Time to Celebrate”

Only a select few people are lucky enough to be serenaded by Jennifer Hudson on their birthday, and the singer’s son, David Daniel Otunga Jr., is one of them. In a video shared on Instagram on Aug. 10, Hudson celebrated her only child’s 14th birthday by singing a few notes of “Happy Birthday” to the teen. But before she got to the singing portion of his special day, Hudson let her son show off his basketball skills for the camera.

In the video, David wears a red t-shirt with the number 13 on it as he tosses around a basketball. “What’s happening? Why you got that 13 on?” Hudson teased her son. “Ain’t you 14 today?” David responded by telling his mom that he was wearing the same shirt he wore a year ago on his birthday.

When Hudson asked him how old he is now, David grinned as he replied, “14 now.” The reality of her son being 14 caused the singer to say, “Oh my god.” However, she recovered quickly, and launched into a pitch-perfect rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

Hudson used the caption on her video to not only celebrate David, but to ask her fans to help her make his day special by sharing their birthday wishes for him in the comments. “Team Jhud can yal pls help me wish wish my kid DOJ a very happy 14th BIRTHDAY, today!” she wrote. “Wow yal wow, I can not believe that I now have a 14 yr old !!!! God is so good !!!! Time to celebrate !!!”

The “American Idol” alum shares her son with ex-fiancé and former WWE Star David Otunga. The two split in 2017 after more than a decade together. Earlier this year, both Hudson and Otunga were on hand to celebrate their son’s graduation from middle school, which they documented on their respective Instagrams.

At the time, Hudson marveled at her son officially being in high school. “It’s official !!!” she wrote on Instagram. “My baby is a high schooler now. We had such a wonderful day celebrating with family and friends. I am sooo proud of you, DOJ!”
